A new year has begun and again our waterfront faces a new threat. Plans are underway for what would be the world’s biggest nightclub in the Port Lands, a project that could hamper the renewal of this crucial part of our waterfront.
Take a minute and sign the petition against the waterfront mega-club.
Just like the airport expansion issue, this is not just about noise – it’s about balance on our waterfront. The mega-club would have a capacity of 15,500 – that’s just a few thousand shy of the Air Canada Centre (19,800 capacity). Such a stadium-sized venue would create traffic and planning issues for large parts of the waterfront, including the new East Bayfront neighbourhood already under construction east of Yonge.
Urban designer and NoJetsTO endorser Ken Greenberg sees the mega-club on par with the airport expansion, casino and Ferris wheel plans that threatened our waterfront in recent years. Coming from the designer of the Port Lands renewal plans, this tells us how big the risk is. The existing nightclub has been operating smoothly for years and there’s no need to change the status quo.
Waterfront for All, a nascent group co-founded by NoJetsTO, is fighting the mega-club plans. Please take a minute to sign their petition to the Ontario Alcohol and Gaming Commission to stop the mega-club’s liquor license. After defeating the jets, we can’t let another wrong-headed development threaten our vision for a renewed waterfront.
Thank you for speaking out,
Norman Di Pasquale
NoJetsTO Chair
PS: We continue to stay vigilant on the jets issue. Porter CEO Deluce still has designs for airport expansion, as he recently confessed.
